This painting evokes recollections of my first trip to New York. I was in the US on business and made a detour to New York to visit my brother who was working there at the time. Being my first trip I wanted to do all the touristy things including a show on Broadway. While my brother was at work in his job as hipster architect I was happily out seeing the sights. He tried to convince me that a better option than Broadway would be a basement band that played improvised music on pieces of garbage, not for being dissuaded I booked tickets to the mainstream show ‘River Dance’ (Irish folk meets American dance). To my surprise he agreed to join me and after 2 hours of what I thought was a sensational show the entire audience was on their feet in a standing ovation – everyone that is except my brother who was seated with his arms folded with a scowl on his face.

This artwork offers an aerial view of a morning still life – Whilst my initial focus is on the objects themselves, especially Australian flora and their arrangement and colour balance, increasingly the negative space of the table with its painted shadows became just as important.

The process of composition can resemble performance art, orchestrating the bringing together of the seasonal fruit, flowers, objects, with a sunlit day, shadows moving according to the time of day, passing clouds, wind moving cloth and leaves, rotation of the table, until all falls into an internally satisfying whole, captured immediately with sketches and photographs for later rendition in acrylic underpainting, then oil paint on canvas using brush and palette knife, resulting in a lightly textured surface with dense colour saturation.

This piece is part of my 'Refraction painting' series.
‘Refraction painting’, is a term I use to describe the colour based works, that use semi-transparent acrylic in the face. This acrylic screen scatters the light waves and creates a refraction event in real-time. Colour and form, are the vehicle to express the behaviour of light within the frame and draw your attention to the optical effects of the material.

It has been an interest of mine to question and subvert ‘painting’, as a formal tradition. In many ways, these works are sculptures, in the guise of painting. Since it is in the square, or rectangular form, and hangs on the wall, we read the works as paintings, and they are certainly informed by a painting practice.

Is it a painting, if we can’t see the paint? We perceive its colour and luminosity, yet the texture, mark, and surface-based concerns can not be examined with any scrutiny. Eliminating one element like this allows another, to become more pronounced. So colour appears to be the focus of the work, although, in my mind, it has always been a secondary support system, for the light refraction, which occurs with this specific framing method.

I spend much of my time physically toggling between the eclectic urban sunsets of Marrickville and the smorgasbord of natural beauty of the Canberra Region. I drive around Canberra a lot. This painting was inspired by a visit to the Arboretum on the Easter Long weekend. I took a few out of character wrong turns on the way to this great attraction along Forest Drive. I am glad those detours occurred as I was treated to some delightful vistas. This painting is an amalgamation of several points of view across the weekend. Telstra Tower is barely visible but perfectly identifies this great region. I kept my palette knife looser than usual and really tried to be free and flowing with my application of colour. I wanted to capture the vibrancy and buzz, the prettiness and moodiness.

The painting is loosely based on the Chinese's God of Longevity and Japanese Kabuki theatre.

This work is part of a long running exploration of drapery as a metaphor for human experiences. The recent works have shown the drapery as an intervention in nature. The basic components of the fabric come from nature but have been processed to a point where the product, the drapery, overlays or intrudes on nature, separate from nature, signifying human intervention even in the wildest and remote places. The new series also references religiousity, as opposed to spirituality, as another tool we use to place ourselves above and separate to nature, instead of revering, honouring and maintaining the environment that sustains us.
